About Phil Busey
Dr. Phil Busey, CCA, CPAg
Dr. Phil Busey, CCA, CPAg, is President of Phil Busey Agronomy Consulting Inc., and University of Florida Professor Emeritus.
His objectives are to increase profits and reduce environmental impacts through efficient management of crops and landscapes as an independent consultant with Brookside Laboratories, Inc.
Dr. Busey's focus and interest are soil and plant nutrition, integrated weed and water management of crops, management operations of subtropical grasses, e.g., golf courses, sod farms, equestrian centers, vegetables, subtropical fruits, energy crops, and environmentally sensitive lands in Florida and the Caribbean Basin.
Dr. Busey's academic achievements are a Ph.D. in Agronomy and Plant Genetics, University of Arizona, Tucson, 1976; M.S. in Agronomy, University of Illinois, Urbana, 1971; and B.S. in Agronomy with Distinction, Colorado State Univ., Fort Collins, 1969.
From 1976 to 2011 he was Assistant and Associate Professor of Environmental Horticulture (Turfgrass Breeding, Weed Science), University of Florida, Davie, FL. Specialties included turfgrass weed science, optimization of best vegetation management in turfgrasses and grasslands using cultural management, new herbicides, cultural management of weeds, development of an herbicide replacement for MSMA for goosegrass control in bermudagrass golf courses and sports fields, turfgrass knowledge base, e.g., weed keys, herbicide databases, and he was inventor of three patented grasses.
Earlier, from 1970-1973, he was Horticultural Instructor, Herbarium Assistant, and Research Assistant, Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, MO. Responsibilities were vocational and on-the-job instruction for potential high school drop-outs, plant collection expedition to Panama, and writing of keys to and descriptions of plant families and species.
University of Florida courses taught were Genetics, AGR 3003; Grass Biology, ORH 4932; Golf and Sports Turf Management, ORH 4223; Turfgrass Culture, ORH 3222C; Landscape IPM: Ornamentals and Turf, PMA 4242; Turfgrass Science, ORH 4224C; Landscape and Turfgrass Management, ORH 4236C; and Weed Science, PLS 4601C.
Service included assistance to County Extension Faculty throughout Florida with diagnostic help; over 200 popular articles on turfgrass management; over 300 lectures and presentations to turfgrass managers, and teaching of Pesticide Certification classes.
Dr. Busey was Associate editor, 1990-1995, American Society for Horticultural Science, HortScience and the Journal of the American Association for Horticultural Science; and Associate editor, 2004-2007, Applied Turfgrass Science by the Plant Management Network.
